The action takes place in the fall of 1920. A simple and friendly group of young men serve in the musical corps of one of the Armenian Dashnak regiments. But then a new clarinetist, Tsolak Darbinyan, joins the orchestra, immediately earning everyone's dislike. His father was a merchant, and he himself was a former Wrangel soldier. Moreover, the next day, when meeting an important Englishman at the train station, all the musicians deliberately tore their tunics; only Tsolak showed up in a brand-new uniform. The conductor allowed Tsolak to go into town at any time. And the senior musician, Arsen (Frunze Mkrtchyan), decides to teach the newcomer a lesson. But in a fight, the burly senior musician is defeated by the puny young man. And then, much becomes clear to Arsen. Tsolak's evenings in town are not to visit his sick aunt. A friendship develops between the musicians and Tsolak, which deepens after they free the revolutionary Anait from drunken Mauserists and shelter the Bolshevik leader Tigran. The musicians learn that the Dashnaks have decided to send their regiment against the communists, who have incited the people to revolt. Tsolak is tasked with swaying his regiment's soldiers to the side of the rebels. But that same evening, following a denunciation by one of the musicians, the Dashnaks arrest the entire band. They demand to know where Tsolak Darbinyan is hiding. But the musicians remain silent, undaunted even by the threat of execution. They are saved by the news: the regiment has defected to the Bolsheviks.
